Several locals, headlined by former National Seniors Men's Champion Kelly Robertson, were in action this past week in Winnipeg at the 2014 Safeway Championship.
Robertson opened his tournament with a convincing 10-4 win over Virden's Graham Freeman, but followed that with a tough match-up against Fort Rouge's Mike McEwen where Robertson fell to a 10-4 defeat and was sent to the B-Side Bracket.
There, Robertson fell to Riverton's Justin Richter 8-7 to be eliminated from the Championship.
Gladstone's Geoff Trimble was also at the Championship but was knocked out after hist first two games, losing 7-4 to Brandon's Rob Fowler in his opening match and following that with a 7-4 loss to Jared Kolomaya from Stonewall.
Another local, Minnedosa's Glenn Parrott, saw a familiar fate. The skip was given an unenviable opening round match-up against McEwen and lost 10-2. Parrott followed that with an 11-4 loss to Virden's Freeman to be eliminated from the weekend.
From a bit further down Highway 5, Carberry's William Kuran managed to extend his Safeway Championship experience to three games.
The Carberry rink topped Trevor Loreth 9-6 in their opening match before losing 6-3 to William Lyburn and Deer Lodge's Sean Grassie 7-3 on the B-Side.
