Cross-country teams from Neepawa and area travelled to Carberry for the annual Zone 6/7 championships and open meet race.
Leading the way for the day were two NACI athletes, Logan Young and Daniel Heschuk, who finished a close first and second in the senior varsity 5 km race in blistering time.
Young finished first with a time of 16:46.5 while Heschuk was only eight-tenths of a second behind him.
And while their finish was exciting, their times were what amazed coach Bryce Koscielny. They finished almost two minutes ahead of the next closest competitors.
“Just before they came into sight I looked at my stopwatch and figured they'd still be about another minute, and then they appeared,” Koscielny said, adding he rechecked his stopwatch a few times thinking there must have been an error. “Those were great times.
They would have been good enough to place them as the top two at
last year's provincials.”
There were also many other locals putting together some great finishes.
Erickson Collegiate's Maia Wallis won the Zone 7 JV Girls 3 km run with a 14:44.7 time, while Gladstone's William Morton Collegiate placed second through fifth – in order, Rianna Tonn, Maire Lou Schneeberger, Megan Sollner and Kelsey Tonn – in the 3km SV event.
In the 5km Boys JV Run, NACI's Nick Kuharski and Landon Young finished third and fourth, while WMCI's Clay Ferguson placed fifth.
