NFSC to host Provincial Championship

About 200 skaters will be heading to Neepawa this Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3 as the Neepawa Figure Skating Club (NFSC) hosts Skate Manitoba's 2013 STARSkate Championship. The event will feature some of the province's best young figure skaters including a strong local contingent of 11 skaters – NFSC's Zoie Forgue, Brooklyn Chartrand, Krista and Kara Ellis, Lara Denbow, Madison Kilburn, Allie Jakubowski, Jaylin Joss, Emma Salmon, Jenna Beaumont and Claire Tomoniko. NFSC's synchro team Lil' Ice Pec*Ice will also be featured over the weekend as entertainment during the opening ceremonies scheduled for this Saturday at 12:55 p.m. “It's exciting for us to host such a big figure skating championship with all of the talent that will be coming,” host committee chair Marsha Forgue said. “We have a great contingent of Neepawa skaters for the weekend which is great for our club and should be an exciting draw to bring people from the community out to the rink.” There will be a variety of events over the weekend ranging from skaters aged eight and under, to the juvenile, junior silver, senior silver and senior bronze level. Skaters had to attend regional competitions to qualify for the provincial championship. Saturday's event schedule will feature the younger age groups, begins at 8 a.m. and runs until the final event scheduled to end between 6-7 p.m. Sunday's schedule also begins at 8 a.m., with the junior, juvenile and senior programs set for that day. Tickets to the event are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Those 12 and under get in free. “We've had lots of support for this from both our parents and the community,” Forgue said. “We've received a lot of cash and draw donations, and a lot of volunteers have signed up. We really appreciate it, and look forward to seeing everyone come out to take in a few skates over the weekend.”
