Around 400 staff from Manitoba's schools used their inservice day last Friday to head to NACI for the 10th Annual BYTE K-12 Conference. The conference, which moves around the province to different communities annually, gives teachers a chance to switch roles and take a turn as the student as they learn more about the technologies available to them. Teachers were able to attend four sessions throughout the day with a selection of about 80 different courses offered; about 20 courses offered per session. “The courses aren't so much a complete, comprehensive teaching of all the technologies,” BPSD's Ron Nordstrom, an event organizer, explained. “It's really about showing teachers technologies and how to incorporate them in to the classroom as an educational tool.” Courses included instruction on mobile learning using iPads, incorporating social media like blogging into teachings, as well as using interactive whiteboards and digital media such as video or music. Various other courses were also offered. Organizers had expected about 250 people to attend the conference, so the 400 in attendance was a welcome surprise for the day.
