Makin' Change Students in Reston are putting the adage “every penny counts” to good work. The Reston Recorder tells its readers that the Reston School Social Justice Program has raised $2,000 with its “Makin' Change” initiative that collected change from students and the community. The money raised is split and will go to toward both the Reston Memorial Theatre as well as the Reston and Area Daycare. As a reward, the theatre has invited Grade 7 to 12 students to a viewing of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. Against amalgamation Another council has added its name to the already long list of municipalities disgruntled with the Province's 'forced' amalgamation plans. The RM of Glenwood has opted to let the Province know it has yet to find an amalgamation partner at this time. The RM has had informal conversations with other councils, but feel they are too busy dealing with more pressing municipal issues right now, The Souris Plaindealer reports. The RM is also asking its residents to sign a petition that, among other claims, states the Province did not notify municipalities prior to the Throne Speech Nov. 19 and the amalgamation deadlines imposed are unrealistic. TinHouse Home One of Canada's well-kept art secrets is making a home in Russell. The Russell Banner's front page story and photo spread gives its readers a taste of the new art gallery/art lessons studio/coffee house opening in that community. Both glass and tin art will be on display and taught at the new business called The TinHouse Coffee Co. Operators Tyler Kilkenny and his partner Todd Sawyer have taken their acclaimed art show across the country over the last couple years and are now deciding that Russell is a good spot to have a permanent location. The pair believe the new business coincides with the changing demographics in Russell that include younger people and summer cottage owners. Hockey Day Folks in the Onanole and Riding Mountain National Park area enjoyed the winter weather last weekend by celebrating Hockey Day in Canada the weekend of Feb. 9. The Minnedosa Tribune reports over 100 people took part in activities in the Park as part of the day, including birding, cross country ski workshops, a winter camping demo and Beaver Tails. The Onanole Hockey Tournament and Annual Cabin Fever Social the same weekend attracted a few more people to the area.
