Gladys Campbell December 10, 1916 – February 2, 2013 Peacefully on 2 February 2013, Gladys Campbell, beloved sister, aunt, cousin and friend, passed from this life to the next. She is predeceased by her parents, Catherine and John Campbell and sisters Maggie Adamson and Mary Buchanan, nephews Ronny and Barry Adamson and cousins and lifetime friends Eileen and Murray Allan. Gladys will be missed by her sister Gertie, niece Cheryl (Guy) Brouillard, her great nephews and many “great-greats”. Gladys played a major role in the lives of Glenda and Giuseppi Caligiuri, Kevin and Laura Allan and their families, as well as in the lives of the multitude of friends who were drawn to her in life. She retired from The Hudson’s Bay downtown store in Winnipeg, where she worked in the Grocery Department, for 35 years and developed many strong and valued friendships during that time. In her early days, Gladys, her parents and three sisters lived in Riding Mountain, Manitoba. She worked in Fort William, Ontario during WWII and on returning to Manitoba after the War Gladys moved to Winnipeg and lived with Eileen and Murray Allan in their home. She quickly became part of the family. Eventually a couple of babies, Glenda and Kevin, were born into that family and were loved by Gladys, as if they were her own. Giuseppi Caligiuri married Glenda in 1976 and quickly came to know and feel the love that Gladys had for us all. Her hobby was knitting. She knit toques, scarves and mitts for the Christmas Cheer Board for many years, as well as for classrooms full of students in need. Every new baby had a hand-made layette or afghan from Gladys and we were never cold because we had “Gladys sweaters” to keep us warm. Our Gladys loved to travel, and travel she did. She went to locations all across Canada, Australia and surrounding areas, many USA destinations, and to Las Vegas as often as she could get there. In a moment of bravery, Gladys treated and accompanied her favorite trio of teenagers, Glenda, Kevin and Cheryl, to an Alaskan Cruise in 1972. A brave soul no doubt, and she made it a holiday we will always lovingly remember. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of her; we will miss her strength and fierce independence, the love she showered upon us and the quick wit that she maintained until she left us. We want to extend our sincere thanks and gratefulness to the staff at West Park Manor in Winnipeg, who were with Gladys every step of her last years and cared for her as if she was their own. In line with Gladys’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date. In Gladys’s memory, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
