Bring-your-own-glyphosate tank mix launched

Off-patent firm packs Group 2 ingredient alone for combo

A new off-patent version of PrePass herbicide will provide just the Group 2 ingredient for Prairie wheat, oat and barley growers to tank-mix with their own glyphosates.

Mana Canada, the Winnipeg-based Canadian ag chem arm of Israel's Makhteshim Agan, on Wednesdsay launched its broadleaf herbicide Priority, whose registration covers it for use only in the Prairie provinces and British Columbia's Peace region -- and only for tank-mixing with glyphosate before application.

Used with glyphosate, Priority can be applied pre-seed or post-harvest prior to seeding wheat (spring, winter and durum), barley or oats, and is also registered for use with glyphosate in chemfallow, to control broadleaf and grassy weeds.

Rather than co-packing florasulam, Priority's Group 2 active ingredient, with glyphosate (Group 9), Mana "decided to package florasulam as a stand-alone product," the company's general manager, Andrew Mann, said in a release. "This gives customers the ability to tank-mix Priority with their preferred brand of glyphosate."

Priority is to be applied at 0.04 litres per acre with 180 grams of glyphosate per acre, mixed with water at 20 to 40 litres per acre. For control of larger annuals and established perennials, Priority can be tank-mixed with a higher rate of glyphosate, the company said.

As a pre-seeding treatment in low-disturbance seeding systems, the Priority/glyphosate tank-mix can be applied just before seeding, but in other cropping systems should be applied at least a week before seeding.

As a post-harvest treatment it can be applied after Oct. 1 but before freeze-up; on chemfallow, it should be applied when weeds are "actively growing."

In Dow AgroSciences' PrePass -- which is also available only for Prairie use -- florasulam is mixed at 50 grams per litre to 360 g/L acid equivalent of glyphosate -- the broad-spectrum active in products such as Roundup, Touchdown, Polaris, Maverick, ClearOut, Start Up and Mana Canada's Glyphogan, among several others.

Florasulam is also an ingredient in Dow's Frontline, Benchmark, Stellar and Spectrum, Nufarm's Assert FL and Syngenta's Broadband -- all of which are combos involving other actives.
