Catherine “Kay” Jane Jenkins

Catherine “Kay” Jane Jenkins passed away peacefully on January 2, 2013 at the Country Meadows Care Home in Neepawa at the age of 93 years. Her health rapidly deteriorated over the last few weeks and the family gathered together to be with her on New Year’s Eve until she slipped peacefully away from us. Kay was born on November 1, 1919 and was the only daughter of 4 children of John and Rebecca Bremner. She was raised on the family farm in the Mentmore District. She met Tom Jenkins in the late 1930s and they were married on July 30, 1941 just prior to Dad going overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers. While Tom was away Mom worked at the farm and Scotty’s Tea Room in Neepawa. When Dad returned from the war in 1946 they purchased their home at 414 Second Avenue. Mom worked as a Retail Sales Clerk at Fenwick’s Department Store, Martin’s Store and Wally’s Jewelry. She also found time to continue to help out at the farm; cooking meals and cleaning for her Dad and her youngest brother. She and Tom raised two children, Susan and Ken. She strongly believed in her family and hosted many large family dinners. Her nephews, nieces and grandchildren were always welcomed at her house. She enjoyed the fellowship and loyalty of close friends over many years and cherished her time with them; either in a friendly game of cards, working together or just having a coffee. Mom worked hard however she still found time to enjoy family and friends. She loved activities such as dancing and camping. In latter years she enjoyed her time at their Clear Lake Cottage where she found more friends to play cards with and to periodically fish with Dad. Mom’s life changed in 1985 when Tom passed away from Cancer. Although she carried on with her Bridge games and still enjoyed her family; she always possessed a sense of profound loss. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren as she watched them grow and participated in their lives as much as she could despite her failing health. Susan’s two sons, Chad and Derek were nearby in Brandon and Ken and Janice’s three children; Tina, Kelly and Niki lived in Neepawa for several years and all of the kids were with their Grandma often. Derek’s three children and Daryl and Tina’s four children provided lots of entertainment for their Great Grandma whenever they visited her. Mom was predeceased by her Mother and Father (Rebecca and John Bremner), husband Tom, brothers, Ernie, Francis and Donald. She is survived by her daughter Susan (Garry), grandchildren Chad and Derek, son Ken (Janice) and grandchildren Tina, Kelly and Niki. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren (Derek’s children) Maddox, Ethan and Hunter; and Daryl and Tina’s children; Brett, Lyndon, Denby and Nolan. The funeral service was held at White’s Funeral Home with Rita Friesen officiating. Internment followed in the Riverside Cemetery where Mom was laid to rest beside her beloved Tom. Pallbearers were nephews; Bruce and Barry Bremner, niece Yvonne Kriski; grandchildren; Chad, Derek and Kelly. Honorary pallbearers were all those in attendance. Mom’s life was a full long one and now she is at rest after those many years of providing so much to her family. Donations in memory of Kay can be made to the Alzheimer Association of Manitoba or the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba Mom: You never failed to do your best; Your heart as true and tender; You lived your life for those you loved; And those you loved will always love you and remember you.
