Before any rocks are thrown next Wednesday to begin the curling for the 2013 Safeway Championship in Neepawa, fans will have a chance to throw some money down on the team they favour as tournament champions. The official Championship calcutta is scheduled for next Tuesday, Feb. 5, beginning at 8 p.m. - right after the opening banquet for the Championship earlier that evening. The calcutta event is open to anyone and will be hosted at the Yellowhead Centre. “We're hoping to see lots of people coming out to it,” calcutta organizer Kelly Robertson said. “We've had a few buying groups (for calcutta teams) already tell us they are coming so it should be good. “When we hosted the women's championship a few years back we raised around $20,000, and I'm sure hoping this one is going to match or exceed that number.” The calcutta will feature 16 team pairings matched up together based on their rankings for the Championship. The entire calcutta will be wildcard, so the highest bidders always get to pick their favoured team pairing remaining. Of the money raised through the calcutta, about 14 per cent will go to the Neepawa Curling Club and Yellowhead Centre, 1.5 per cent to the government, and 84.5 per cent will be split unevenly between calcutta participants who finish first to eighth. First place will get 35 per cent of the pot. The Safeway Championship will run from Feb. 6-10. Tickets are still available in Neepawa at Gill and Schmall Agencies and Harris Pharmacy.
