Bar crowd causes issues for detachment

A spate of vandalism in Gladstone had members busy where vandals have been spray painting vehicles and buildings. If anyone has any information regarding this senseless crime, please call Crime Stoppers. You may remember reading about a scam involving e-mail messages which appear to be from Canada Post. This has surfaced again. New emails using Canada Post’s name or brand are circulating, inviting customers to either click a link or open a document to obtain their tracking information. They wish to remind customers not to click on any links or open documents. These fraudulent messages are known as “phishing” and may contain viruses. If you are not expecting a package, delete the email. If you are, please do not click on the hyperlink. Instead, enter your tracking number directly on the canadapost.ca site to find out about delivery status. Another scam, involving vehicles for sale on Kijiji, the popular selling website, targetted one of our auxiliary constables. He received a text from someone saying they would buy the vehicle that was up for sale, using Paypal to exchange funds and their “agent” would pick up the vehicle for them. The auxiliary texted back advising he only dealt with cash and face-to-face with the buyer. He is still awaiting a reply! Once again, we are reminding drivers with a beginner’s licence that they must have a fully licenced driver supervising them. Members pulled over a vehicle to serve the owner a ticket from a previous indiscretion and, even though the driver said he hadn’t been drinking, the roadside testing device and subsequent breathalyzer test said otherwise. The driver was found to be impaired and charged. Members can serve a ticket to a person who has been witnessed to break the law up to six months after the occurrence. Members had more than a few speeders, especially over the long weekend. Our Speeder of the Week was nabbed at 146 kms. in a 100 zone, and thought a good story would get him out of the ticket. He told our corporal that he was rushing to the hospital in Minnedosa as his mother was involved in an accident “on the big hill”. Our corporal was sure there hadn’t been an accident in Minnedosa, a fact which was confirmed via radio. The driver was charged with the speeding offence, but not for lying to police. His ticket of $634.50 will probably leave a lasting impression. Over the past couple of weekends, members have been cracking down on the after hours shenanigans outside our local drinking establishment. Large boisterous crowds have been waking up the neighbourhood, causing vandalism, pulling out stop signs and real estate signs, removing man hole covers, as well as leaving beer cans and garbage in their wake. For the past three weekends, members have provided a place to stay for some of the more belligerent offenders. Members are hoping they will learn from their experience and tell their friends.
