70 years ago - Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1942: Jack Hunter was one of the first soldiers to land on the shores of Dieppe. He was awarded the Military Medal for his efforts.

80 years ago Friday, Oct.14, 1932 The only three classes of people who live behind high fences are criminals, the insane and the very wealthy. 70 years ago Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1942 Jack Hunter, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hunter, of Neepawa, was awarded the Military Medal for bravery on the field. Jack was one of the first to land on the shore of Dieppe, and under heavy fire from all sides, exposed himself while cutting a hole through the heavy enemy wire. When the wire was out, Jack hauled his mortar onto the beach and laid down a smoke screen while his platoon went through and over the seawall. In this action he showed both total disregard for his own safety, and his gallantry was of the highest order. He was wounded during the encounter. 60 years ago Thursday, Oct. 9, 1952 Members of the Neepawa Golf and Country Club held an enjoyable banquet and dance Wednesday evening in the Legion Memorial Hall to wind up the season’s golf activities. The dinner was attended by 130 persons with approximately 160 being present at the dance. President Wally Cram was chairman for the evening program. Frank Lee was the caterer for the dinner. 50 years ago Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1962 It is interesting to note that out of the 16 students who graduated from Grade 12 at NACI last year, all but three have gone on to further studies at universities and colleges. Of the three who are entering other fields, one is studying to be a lab technician, one has entered banking and one is farming. 40 years ago Thursday, Oct. 12, 1972 Neepex '72 has been saluted by the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce as “the best project of the month by any chamber in Manitoba”, according to the official Manitoba Chambers of Commerce monthly release, The Communicator. 30 years ago Thursday, Oct. 14, 1982 Hearings continue through Wednesday in Neepawa to determine if Gardewine North, a Winnipeg based trucking firm, will have the right to deliver in Neepawa revoked. The hearing was called by the Motor Transit Board following a complaint by Hares Cartage Ltd. of Neepawa that the beer hauled from Associated Beer Distributors in Winnipeg had been arbitrarily changed to Gardewine despite their excellent record of service. As of Sept. 1, Gardewine was to haul beer to Neepawa, but an injunction prevented this pending results of the court decision. 20 years ago Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1992 A 48-year-old Brandon man died last Thursday after he was overcome by smoke while burning stubble on his Gladstone area farm. Garry Durnin was clearing a long-unused piece of property he had bought in the Gladstone area. Durnin’s brother Jim said that Garry was clearing the land, which had not been worked for eight or nine years, so he could plant a crop next spring. It was “just an unfortunate accident”, Jim Durnin said. While Durnin was burning his field of stubble, the fire jumped to a neighbour’s property, setting fire to hay bales. Instead of going for help, Durnin tried to extinguish the fire himself. Durnin did manage to put out the fire, but he was overcome by smoke and died at the scene. 10 years ago Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 The Neepawa and Area Development Corporation has committed $6,000 toward a proposed community day care facility. NADCO chairman Terry Volden – who was also running for re-election on town council - said the need for a community day care has often been overlooked. “It’s not glamorous like major industry, but we have to look after the people we have in our community,” Volden said. “And when we have things in place like day care and affordable housing, maybe more people will come. “This has been one of the issues that is holding us back.”
