A feasibility study process to provide analysis to support the determination of a decision by Parks Canada regarding the Agassiz Ski Area and subsequent strategy for the East Escarpment of Riding Mountain National Park commences January 21, 2011.
Mount Agassiz Ski Area closed in spring of 2000 after 40 years of successful operation and remains heralded as the finest site for a ski area in the prairies.
The feasibility study forms part of the process to develop an East Escarpment Area Strategy to ensure visitors have genuine opportunities to discover, experience and learn about this unique area of Riding Mountain National Park and the province. An external advisory board has been meeting since this past October which will collectively provide advice and guidance to Parks Canada during the area strategy’s development.
It is expected this study will be complete May 20, 2011 with public participant consultations being held this spring. A new Park Management Plan is to be determined in 2012 that sets the course in 5-year intervals. The Management Plan that forewent development of Agassiz Ski Area was tabled in 2007.
