As of tomorrow it will be against the law to talk on your cell phone while driving.
While numerous studies have shown that drivers who talk or text on a cell phone while behind the wheel significantly increase their crash risk, the Manitoba government is now taking action to stop or at least decrease these odds.
The fine for the new law passed by legislation is a whopping $200.
The only time that you are allowed to use the prohibited devices will be in the case of an emergency such as phoning police, ambulance or fire services.
The only device that a consumer can use legally is a wireless bluetooth technology that you place in your ear which allows you to talk and share information like voice, music and videos wirelessly
Team Electronics in Neepawa has stocked up on bluetooth devices for the cell phone ban and workers said that they have been leaving the shelves steadily.
Manitoba is not the only province in the country to pass this law as they have joined the likes of Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Also on the agenda for July 15 amendments to the Highway Traffic Act is the ban of smoking in your vehicle with children under the age of 16. The rule applies to all motor vehicles even if a window, sunroof or door is open. The fine is also $200 for this offence.
