Neepawa Home Hardware turn old grey decks the green way

Neepawa Home Hardware announced today it now carries a complete one-day green, clean and pristine makeover for wooden decks that saves time, money and the environment. Home Hardware’s one-day Woodshield Restoration System uses exclusive Natura environmentally conscious products to complete an entire deck project, including all necessary prep and staining, all in one day.
Natura products are phosphate free, bio-degradable and do not harm the environment.
“There’s nothing like sitting out on your deck enjoying a great Canadian summer,” said Sharon Howe, Paint Specialist, Neepawa Home Hardware.
“Neepawa Home Hardware has everything you need from helpful advice to environmentally-friendly products so your family, friends and company can enjoy a good looking deck all summer long.”
The key to a long-lasting deck makeover is in the preparation. There are three possible “preps” required to ensure the longevity of a deck makeover: Stripping existing stain; removing mildew; and removing water repellents and/or bringing wood back to its natural patina. The deck may require one, two or all three of these prep stages.
“Nobody really enjoys prep work, but doing it properly will ensure that the stain lasts longer,” said Howe.
“If you ignore the prep, your high performing stain can fail in a year or less.”
If existing stain is peeling, Natura Safe Strip is tough and green. Just dampen the surface, apply the remover with a brush or roller and then 30 minutes later, when the coating begins to lift, scrub with a stiff brush or scraper and rinse.
Mildew is an invisible menace and often lies dormant and invisible until the conditions are right, at which time they bloom. “Once mildew gets underneath the stain, it is a labour intensive job to get rid of it,” said Howe.
By using Natura Mildew Off before applying stain, mildew is effectively removed from the wood. Simply apply to a dampened surface with a brush, roller or spray.
Untreated wood will quickly turn grey. Grey wood consists of dead wood fibres that will cause stain to peel and prematurely fail if they are not removed before staining.
Natura Wood Prep brings back the natural patina of the wood and cleans away dirt, moss and dead fibres. It will also remove water repellents that will prevent stain from penetrating and cause stain failure.
Simply apply Natura Wood Prep to a damp surface with brush, roller or spray. Let stand for 5 – 10 minutes. Scrub with a stiff bristle brush and rinse.
With prep work done, all that remains is to apply the protective top coat in either semi-transparent or solid water based acrylic stains. Beauti-Tone manufactures Wood Shield durable water based stains formulated for the Canadian climate and designed to be user and environmentally friendly, mildew and fade resistant . Wood Shield Best latex stains may be applied while wood is still damp (not wet).
If using regular stains, wood needs to be thoroughly dry first. That’s all it takes – one day of work for years of great looking deck.
Located right downtown, Neepawa Home Hardware has served the people of Neepawa for over 25 years and under the current ownership for the past year. Sharon Howe has brought her passion for colour to Neepawa Home Hardware for the past 22 years.
