With a population of 3,500, Neepawa is smaller than most Junior ‘A' towns in Canada. As a result, hundreds of volunteer hours from business owners, citizens, farmers, retirees, students and professionals are required to keep the team going.
Manitoba's newest RBC Local Hockey Leader Ellen Clark epitomizes this volunteer spirit and community pride. As billet coordinator for the Neepawa Natives Clark finds homes within the community for players, manages team fundraising, supports ‘her boys' and acts as a liaison between coaches, billet families and players.
“Hockey is a big part of our community – as with most small towns in Canada – and we are so proud of our Neepawa Natives,” wrote Neepawa's Ryan McLaughlin in a letter nominating Clark.
“Without Mary Ellen Clark, our program would definitely not be successful and it would be very tough for Junior hockey to continue in Neepawa.”
A familiar and welcome face at the arena, Clark's volunteer efforts have earned her the Manitoba 125 Citizenship award and the Neepawa Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award.
Clark can now add the title of RBC Local Hockey Leader and recognition in the Hockey Hall of Fame to this distinguished list of accomplishments.
“Mary Ellen is truly deserving of this award,” added McLaughlin.
“She does not do this for money or for recognition, but because she has one of the biggest hearts I know and truly does care about the players and hockey's role in the community.”
