Students going power smart

Neepawa received a powerful gift last week.
Manitoba Hydro Power Smart program has been initiating school programs for Grade 5 students across Manitoba. Their goal is to educate students on the program, give them learning tools and for them to share their information with their communities.
Hazel M. Kellington School students were involved with helping to promote Manitoba Hydro's program for the last two years.
Last year the north west quadrant of Neepawa was completed with handing out Power Smart bags full of information on how to save energy, energy efficiency ideas and two new Compact Fluorescent Light-bulbs (CFLs) from the students.
This year, the remainder of Neepawa was completed for a total of around 1,000 homes.
"This is a great way to educate kids and give back to the community," Stephanie Hykel, of Manitoba Hydro, said.
"By the end of 2010, 127 schools will have participated and over 60,000 homes will have received the information packages, that's 120,000 light-bulbs the energy saved from these light-bulbs equals 1 million litres of gasoline, could take 738 vehicles off the road in a year, or 281,264 trees saved from being harvested. It's an incredible amount."
